New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is planning to acquire 24 Special Utility Helicopters (SUH) for VVIP transport duties, as India moves to strengthen its dedicated air-transport capabilities. The proposal came amid a broader defence modernisation push, with the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, granting Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for SUHs as part of procurement proposals worth approximately ₹2.12 lakh crore on October 26.

According to media reports, the proposed acquisition is intended to support the movement of senior dignitaries and meet specialised transport requirements. Dedicated helicopters offer flexibility for short-distance travel and access to locations where fixed-wing aircraft may not be practical.
The Ministry of Defence said that the approved SUHs will help meet the IAF’s important air-transport requirements. The wider procurement package also covers air-defence systems, weapons, mobile X-band Doppler weather radars and other equipment aimed at strengthening the Air Force’s operational capabilities.
The proposal formed a part of the government’s wider effort to modernise military aviation and improve the availability of specialised transport platforms. However, the Acceptance of Necessity represents in-principle clearance, not a final purchase contract. Further procurement steps will determine the acquisition details, selected platform, delivery schedule and final cost.
