Nagaon [Assam]: The Assam Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has approved the development of a Defence Park spread across approximately 6,000 bighas of land near Nellie, aiming to attract investments in defence equipment manufacturing and establish a dedicated industrial base in the state. The decision is part of Assam's broader effort to expand its industrial ecosystem and strengthen its contribution to India's defence manufacturing sector.

The proposed site covers areas near Nellie in Morigaon district, including several adjoining villages such as Bhogduba, Basundhari, Alisinga, Kholapathar and Sarumati Parbat. The Cabinet has approved transferring the identified land to the Industries Department for developing the facility. The land parcel includes government-owned land as well as plots that will need to be acquired from local residents.

Chief Minister Sarma said that the state intends to address the shortage of dedicated industrial land and infrastructure that has limited its ability to attract defence manufacturing investments. Assam planned to promote the proposed park among major investors through roadshows and other investment outreach activities.

The initiative aligns with the Centre's Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and the push to expand domestic defence production. Several Indian states have already attracted investments in defence manufacturing, including missile and helicopter-related industries, while Assam now sought to establish its own presence in the sector.

The proposed Defence Park is expected to form part of Assam's wider industrial development strategy. However, specific manufacturing projects, investors, investment commitments and production timelines have not yet been announced.
