Chennai: IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation, the technology innovation hub hosted by IIT Madras, signs an MoU with Hyderabad-based Medhastra Techsystems Private Limited on October 13 to develop indigenous defence technologies for the Indian Armed Forces. The partnership targets sovereign artificial intelligence, cognitive electronic warfare, multi-sensor data fusion, undersea sensing and autonomous platforms, supporting India’s push for self-reliance in critical military technologies.
The collaboration brings together IIT Madras’ research capabilities and Medhastra’s defence-technology expertise. The agreement provides for joint research, faculty collaboration, access to laboratory facilities and student engagement, creating a framework to translate academic research into field-ready defence applications.

The focus areas have operational significance. Multi-sensor data fusion can help integrate information from different sensors to improve situational awareness, while AI-enabled systems can support faster analysis and decision-making. Cognitive electronic warfare and autonomous platforms represent additional areas for developing capabilities tailored to evolving battlefield requirements.
The MoU is signed in the presence of IIT Madras Director Professor V. Kamakoti and IITM Pravartak CEO Dr. M. J. Shankar Raman. Air Vice Marshal R. Guruhari (Retd.), Medhastra’s Chief Advisor for Defence, also attends the ceremony. Medhastra founder and CEO Abinav Varma Kalidindi says the partnership will support the development of defence AI designed, developed and manufactured in India.
IITM Pravartak operates in the areas of sensors, networking, actuators and control systems under the Department of Science and Technology’s National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems. Its research ecosystem offers a platform for collaboration between academic researchers and technology companies working on strategic applications.
The partnership reflects a wider effort to connect India’s research institutions with domestic defence companies to build sovereign capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign technology. However, the MoU establishes a collaboration framework; specific systems, delivery timelines, funding and procurement arrangements are not disclosed.
