New Delhi: India reaffirms its commitment to deepen bilateral ties with Spain on October 13, as Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (West) Sibi George represents India as Chief Guest at Spain’s National Day celebrations in New Delhi. The engagement highlights cooperation across trade and investment, defence and security, culture, tourism and people-to-people exchanges, amid the two countries’ 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

The celebrations take place during the India–Spain Dual Year of Culture, Tourism and Artificial Intelligence (AI), which provides a framework for expanding exchanges and collaboration in 2026. The initiative reflects a broader effort to diversify the partnership beyond traditional diplomatic and economic engagement.

Defence cooperation remains an important pillar of the relationship. Earlier in October, Indian Navy warship INS Trishul visits Valencia, where professional interactions and a joint passage exercise with the Spanish Navy support operational interoperability and maritime cooperation.

Industrial collaboration also offers a significant avenue for expanding ties. India’s acquisition of 56 C-295 transport aircraft from Airbus Spain, including 40 to be manufactured in India by Tata Advanced Systems, demonstrates the role of joint production in bilateral defence cooperation.

The two countries are also looking to expand economic and technological engagement as India and the European Union advance their wider trade relationship. The Indian government has highlighted the potential for stronger trade and investment links, while cooperation in AI, education and tourism creates additional avenues for collaboration.

India’s latest reaffirmation signals its intent to maintain momentum in the partnership across defence, industry and emerging technologies. The focus now is on translating the diplomatic engagement and Dual Year activities into sustained cooperation and concrete outcomes.
