New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) showcased indigenous semiconductor technologies for advanced radar systems, electronic warfare and tactical missiles at the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC) 2026, held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, from October 27 to 29. The display highlighted India’s growing capabilities in developing critical defence electronics domestically.

Developed by DRDO’s Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL), Delhi, the showcased technologies included Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (MMICs) based on Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) and Gallium Nitride (GaN), alongside Multi-Chip Modules (MCMs). These components served as building blocks for advanced radar and electronic warfare applications and have been used in several strategic missions.
DRDO also showcased Infrared Focal Plane Arrays (IRFPAs), which act as the sensing elements of tactical missiles. Integrated with imaging infrared seekers, these technologies enable missiles to detect and track targets during the terminal phase of engagement. The exhibits covered short-wave, mid-wave and long-wave infrared technologies.
The organisation also led a dedicated session on semiconductors and next-generation chips at the conclave, bringing together representatives from industry, academia and the indigenous chip-development ecosystem. Discussions covered AI system-on-chips, advanced microprocessors and opportunities to accelerate domestic chip design.
The showcase underscored the strategic importance of semiconductor self-reliance for India’s defence modernisation. Indigenous development of specialised chips can strengthen domestic supply chains and reduce dependence on foreign technologies in critical military systems, although scaling production and ensuring reliable supply remain important challenges.
