New Delhi: France’s Naval Group and Indian defence company Nibe Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic partnership for naval shipbuilding and advanced maritime technologies, adding another industrial collaboration to the expanding India-France defence relationship.
The partnership will cover naval platforms and shipbuilding, underwater drones and their integration with submarines, submarine systems, mine-countermeasure vessels and future weapon-ready modular launching systems. The companies said the cooperation is aimed at strengthening India's self-reliance in naval programmes under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat framework.
A key element is the focus on autonomous underwater systems. Underwater drones can support surveillance, reconnaissance, mine detection and other maritime missions, while their integration with submarines could expand the operational roles of unmanned systems in contested underwater environments.

The agreement also brings Naval Group's experience in advanced naval platforms and submarine technologies together with Nibe's growing capabilities in integrated defence solutions. Naval Group has maintained an industrial presence in India for more than a decade and has been closely involved in the P-75 Scorpène submarine programme, supporting the construction and subsequent lifecycle maintenance of the Kalvari-class submarines.
The partnership comes as India is seeking to expand domestic capacity across the maritime sector, including warships, submarines, unmanned underwater systems and specialised naval equipment. The government has increasingly emphasised greater indigenous content and stronger private-sector participation in naval manufacturing.
For Naval Group, the agreement further expands its network of Indian industrial partnerships. Its existing engagement under P-75 has helped create a domestic supply chain for submarine components and systems, with Indian suppliers participating in manufacturing and technology-intensive activities.
The cooperation also fits into the wider strategic convergence between India and France in the maritime domain. Both countries have described their defence relationship as increasingly focused on industrial cooperation, technology transfer and strengthening India's indigenous defence capabilities. The P-75 programme has previously been highlighted by both governments as a model of Indo-French defence-industrial cooperation.
For India, the importance of the MoU lies particularly in its emphasis on technologies that are becoming increasingly relevant to undersea warfare. Mine-countermeasure systems, autonomous underwater vehicles and modular launch systems can strengthen the Navy's ability to monitor and operate in increasingly complex maritime environments.
The partnership also has an industrial dimension beyond any individual platform. If translated into specific projects and production arrangements, cooperation between Naval Group and Nibe could create opportunities for Indian manufacturing, engineering, MSMEs and technology suppliers, while potentially supporting future domestic and export-oriented naval programmes.
The MoU does not by itself represent a confirmed contract for a specific naval platform or weapon system. Instead, it establishes a framework for technological and industrial cooperation, with individual projects subject to subsequent agreements and approvals.
The development comes as New Delhi seeks to build India into a larger global shipbuilding and maritime-manufacturing centre. The Defence Ministry has recently stressed the need to expand domestic capacity for warships and maritime platforms while improving quality, delivery timelines and maintenance capabilities.
For India's naval industrial base, the Naval Group-Nibe partnership therefore points towards a broader shift: from building ships domestically to developing an ecosystem capable of producing the advanced autonomous, underwater and weapons technologies that will increasingly define future maritime operations.
