New Delhi: India and Poland agreed to deepen cooperation in defence, space and nuclear energy, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi inviting Polish companies to participate in the co-development and co-production of technologies in these strategic sectors during talks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in New Delhi on Thursday, October 22.
Addressing a joint press conference at Hyderabad House following bilateral discussions, Modi said that the two countries have reached an understanding to expand cooperation in these areas, opening avenues for greater industrial collaboration and technology development.

“We invite companies from Poland to engage in co-development and co-production with India in all these strategic sectors,” Modi said, underlining the importance of closer economic and technological engagement between the two countries.
The discussions came as India sought to strengthen its domestic defence manufacturing capabilities and expand international industrial partnerships. For Poland, cooperation offered an opportunity to explore a growing Indian market while building partnerships in research, development and defence production.
Ahead of the talks, Polish Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domanski highlighted the potential for closer defence-industry collaboration, saying Polish companies are interested in working with Indian partners on research and development. He also pointed to Poland’s expanding defence-industrial capabilities and its willingness to supply equipment to India.
Poland has increased its defence spending amid security concerns arising from Russia’s war against Ukraine. Domanski said that the country spends close to five per cent of its gross domestic product on modernising its armed forces, while developing its domestic defence industry.
The visit also bought a substantial business delegation to India, with more than 80 Polish companies expected to engage with Indian counterparts through business interactions in New Delhi and Bengaluru. The discussions covered defence, dual-use technologies, space and other industrial sectors, creating opportunities for commercial and technological partnerships.
The latest understanding built on the India-Poland Strategic Partnership established during Modi’s visit to Poland in August 2024. Both countries have sought to expand cooperation across defence, trade, investment, emerging technologies and energy.
The two sides also looked to leverage broader economic opportunities created by the India-European Union trade relationship. Modi said that the India-EU Free Trade Agreement has widened opportunities for the bilateral partnership, providing further scope for businesses in both countries to expand their engagement.
While the announcement signaled a push towards deeper defence-industrial cooperation, the specific projects, technologies, production arrangements and timelines arising from the understanding remain to be established.
The proposed collaboration nevertheless offered a framework for India and Poland to strengthen defence ties through industrial partnerships, technological cooperation and potential co-production, while broadening their strategic engagement beyond traditional diplomatic and economic relations.
