New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held a “productive” telephone conversation on September 30, reviewing bilateral cooperation across trade, defence, energy, critical technologies and other areas. The two leaders agreed to maintain close engagement to advance the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

“Had a productive conversation with President Trump,” Modi said in a post on X after the call. He added that the two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international issues, including ongoing efforts to promote global peace and security. Both sides agreed to remain in touch.
The conversation comes as trade remains a key issue in the India-US relationship. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is in the United States from September 29 to October 5 for discussions with US officials and business leaders, as New Delhi and Washington continue negotiations on an interim trade arrangement and a broader bilateral trade agreement.
The call also covered defence, energy and critical technologies—areas that have become central to the broader strategic partnership. India and the US have been expanding cooperation in defence technology, energy security, resilient supply chains and emerging technologies under the wider framework of their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
The two leaders’ discussion also comes against a backdrop of evolving US measures concerning countries purchasing Russian energy. Recent US legislation has created the possibility of additional tariffs on imports from countries that significantly purchase Russian oil or gas, adding another layer to the ongoing trade and energy discussions between New Delhi and Washington.
While no new defence agreement or specific trade deal was announced following the call, the conversation underscored the two governments’ intent to maintain engagement across the economic, defence, energy and technology pillars of the bilateral relationship.
