New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has begun a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka from September 8 to 10, with defence cooperation and maritime security expected to feature prominently in discussions with the Sri Lankan leadership.
Singh is leading a high-level delegation comprising senior officials from India's Ministry of Defence and Ministry of External Affairs. He is also scheduled to interact with the Indian diaspora in Colombo.

The visit comes as India continues to strengthen its security partnerships across the Indian Ocean Region, where Sri Lanka occupies a strategically important position close to major maritime routes.
India and Sri Lanka already maintain extensive defence engagement through military training, exercises, professional exchanges and maritime cooperation. Their armed forces also cooperate on areas including maritime security, maritime-domain awareness and other regional security challenges.
For New Delhi, stronger defence ties with Colombo support its wider Neighbourhood First policy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's MAHASAGAR vision, which focuses on security and growth across the wider Indian Ocean.
The strategic importance of the visit extends beyond military-to-military ties.
India and Sri Lanka share a common maritime neighbourhood, making cooperation on sea-lane security, maritime awareness, capacity building and regional stability increasingly important as strategic competition intensifies across the Indian Ocean.
India has also maintained close engagement with Sri Lanka during periods of economic and humanitarian difficulty, including assistance during the country's economic crisis and as an early responder following Cyclone Ditwah in 2025.
The visit therefore combines defence diplomacy with India's broader effort to remain a reliable security partner in its immediate maritime neighbourhood.
The bigger strategic message is clear: for India, strengthening Sri Lanka's defence partnership is not only about bilateral relations—it is about building a more secure and resilient Indian Ocean neighbourhood.
