Sri Lanka calls India’s defence support an ‘Investment’ in future cooperation, seeks deeper maritime ties

Colombo: Sri Lanka has described India's defence support as an “important investment” in future bilateral cooperation, while calling for deeper engagement in maritime security as the two neighbours expand their strategic partnership.

The remarks came during Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's visit to Sri Lanka, where defence cooperation, maritime security and regional stability have emerged as key areas of engagement.

Sri Lankan officials highlighted India's assistance not simply as military support, but as a foundation for long-term capability building and institutional cooperation.

This includes areas such as military training, capacity building, technology cooperation and professional exchanges—helping Sri Lanka strengthen its own defence capabilities while deepening interoperability with India.

India has also offered assistance for the creation of an Artificial Intelligence facility for the Sri Lankan Army, adding an emerging-technology dimension to the partnership.

Sri Lanka's strategic location along major Indian Ocean shipping routes makes maritime cooperation particularly important for both countries.

Deeper cooperation can cover areas such as maritime-domain awareness, naval training, information sharing, search and rescue and regional maritime security.

For India, closer engagement with Colombo strengthens its broader Indian Ocean security architecture and Neighbourhood First approach.

The evolving relationship also reflects a broader shift in India's regional defence diplomacy—from supplying equipment to helping neighbouring countries build capabilities, institutions and technological expertise.

For Sri Lanka, closer defence and maritime cooperation with India provides an important security partnership while supporting its ability to manage challenges in the Indian Ocean.
