Chennai: India and Myanmar have conducted Exercise Rahat Mitra, a joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise in Chennai, aimed at strengthening coordination and interoperability during natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies. The exercise brought together personnel from the two countries to improve their ability to conduct coordinated relief operations and respond effectively to affected communities.

During the exercise, the Indian Army, working alongside the Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, demonstrated the capabilities of its Flood Relief Columns and Engineer Task Forces. The demonstrations included rescue operations, dewatering activities and bridge-laying operations to restore connectivity and provide access to disaster-affected areas.
The exercise also featured professional interactions and exchanges of operational experience between participating personnel. These engagements allow both sides to share best practices, refine disaster-response procedures and improve coordination during complex relief missions.
Rahat Mitra reflected the humanitarian dimension of India-Myanmar defence cooperation and aligns with India's MAHASAGAR vision — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions. The initiative also highlighted the importance of regional collaboration in addressing natural disasters that can affect communities across national borders.
The exercise adds to ongoing military engagement between the two neighbours. Their recent Army-to-Army Staff Talks in Naypyidaw focused on joint training, capacity building and professional exchanges, with India also handing over training simulators to the Myanmar Army.
