MDL adopts comprehensive approach to combat COVID-19

Mumbai: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), a PSU under Ministry of Defence, is extending all possible corporate social responsibility (CSR) help to tide over the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. MDL has taken various steps to tackle the pandemic. This includes giving away a part of the employee' salaries to helping in setting up quarantine centres, distributing ration to the needy people, supplying masks and etcetera. Here is what all MDL has done so far to support the nation's fight against coronavirus borne COVID-19. To help the nation's fight against the pandemic, employees of the company have contributed their one day's salary amounting to Rs 1.02 crore to the Prime Minister's citizen assistance and relief in emergency situations (PM CARES Fund). The information was shared by MDL's CMD Vice Admiral Narayan Prasad on Twitter on Tuesday.

Earlier, the warship builders had contributed Rs 2 crore to PM CARES Fund from its CSR fund. Rs 1 crore were transferred to Maharashtra Chief Minister's Relief Fund. As a major shareholder of Goa Shipyard, MDL remitted Rs 20 Lakhs to the Goa CM's Relief Fund. MDL has provided 200 Coronavirus (COVID-19) protective kits to the quarantine centre at Ghatkopar, set up by the Indian Navy. This project, costing Rs 5 lakh, will be useful to the 50 Kashmiri pilgrims, evacuated from Iran, accommodated at this quarantine centre. 5,000 face masks costing Rs 1 lakh have been supplied to the Kasturba Hospital, which is involved in testing for Coronavirus. These were handed over by Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of MDL to Superintendent of Kasturba Hospital. In addition this, MDL has so far rendered the following direct CSR assistance to needy people:

1. Ration bags have been distributed to 415 families of the migrating tribal community of Katkaris at Kharade and Shahapur tribal belt, through the Karve Institute of Social Sciences, Pune. The total cost of this project is Rs 5 Lakhs.
2. 300 migrant labourers in Mazgaon, involved in fishing activities, are being provided with three meals for 45 days. Executed through the Ratnanidhi Charitable Trust, this project costs Rs 5 Lakhs.
3. 200 needy families in South Bombay slums have been supplied ration bags through Oscar Foundation. This assistance, targeting families of women working in Sassoon Dock in prawn peeling, costs Rs 2.5 lakhs.
