New Delhi: Defence minister Rajnath Singh will celebrate the International Day of Yoga, 2023 with a session on India's newest aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant.

The minister will fly down to Kochi, the headquarters of the Indian Navy's Southern Command to participate in the Yoga event. INS Vikrant is currently stationed there for the function. The Southern naval commander, Vice Admiral M.A. Hampiholi will be present during the event.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will be on the state visit to the U.S. during that period, will be flying into New York on June 20, where he will be leading a yoga session at the United Nations' Secretariat to mark International Yoga Day on June 21.

Stating that the world has "truly embraced" International Yoga Day, UN Resident Coordinator in India Shombi Sharp told that having PM Modi at the UN will be "special".

Recognizing the universal appeal of Yoga, owing to its demonstrated benefits towards immunity building and stress relief, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 21st June as the International Day of Yoga (IDY) on December 11, 2014.

Since 2015, this day has been celebrated all over the world in ever-growing numbers, to remind people across the globe about the benefits of Yoga, and to build enduring public interest in Yoga by highlighting its importance and contributions to public health.

This year, Indian Navy under MoD will celebrate Yoga in select port locations across the world to form a 'Global Ocean Ring' connecting people across the world in the common pursuit of wellness.
