New Delhi: India and Belgium are broadening their bilateral partnership beyond traditional trade, with defence, clean energy, critical minerals, semiconductors and advanced technology emerging as key areas of cooperation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking alongside Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever in New Delhi, highlighted the transformation of the relationship, pointing to cooperation on India's indigenous Zorawar light tank and a major green ammonia project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.

The defence partnership is particularly significant. India and Belgium are already working together on modern defence equipment, with Belgian technological expertise being combined with India's engineering and manufacturing capabilities. The two countries have also agreed to strengthen military exchanges and training cooperation.
The relationship is simultaneously expanding into emerging economic and technological sectors. India and Belgium are looking to deepen cooperation in clean energy, critical minerals and semiconductors, while both sides have set an ambition to double bilateral trade over the next five years.
The green ammonia project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh adds an important energy dimension to the partnership. Such cooperation could connect Belgian technology and investment with India's expanding clean-energy and industrial ecosystem.
The strategic importance of Belgium also extends beyond its size. As an important European economic and technological centre, deeper ties with Brussels can provide India with another avenue for engagement with European supply chains, advanced technologies and industrial networks.
The latest developments therefore point to a relationship that is increasingly moving beyond its traditional diamond-trade foundation.
From Zorawar tanks to green ammonia, India and Belgium are building a partnership around defence, technology, energy and strategic economic resilience.
