New Delhi: The Indian Army’s biannual Army Commanders’ Conference commenced in New Delhi on October 21, bringing senior military leadership together to assess operational readiness, capability development and the force’s future transformation. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to release the new Land Warfare Doctrine on October 23, placing the Army’s response to evolving battlefield threats at the centre of the three-day meeting.

Chaired by Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth, the conference provided a forum to review the security environment, ongoing initiatives and priorities for building a technologically enabled, adaptable fighting force. Chief of Defence Staff General N. S. Raja Subramani, Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and Electronics and Information Technology Secretary S. Krishnan are also scheduled to address the gathering.

The doctrine’s significance lied in the changing nature of land warfare. Recent conflicts increasingly demonstrated the battlefield impact of unmanned aerial systems, loitering munitions, precision strikes and persistent surveillance. Integrating conventional operations with cyber, space and electronic warfare capabilities also became crucial for operational planning.

For the Indian Army, these shifts have implications for force structure, training, equipment priorities and operations across diverse terrain, including the borders with China and Pakistan. The doctrine is intended to provide an overarching framework for preparing for future conflicts, although its specific provisions and implementation priorities will become clearer after its release.

The conference will also featured the unveiling of the annual United Nations Journal, recognition of Army personnel who have served as UN peacekeepers, and awards for Green Military Stations and Aviation Flight Safety.

The doctrine’s importance will depend not simply on its publication, but on how effectively its principles translate into force modernisation, joint operations and battlefield adaptation.
