New Delhi: India’s BrahMos missile system is set to generate more than $600 million in defence exports, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh has said, describing the supersonic cruise missile as a benchmark for India’s emerging high-end defence export story. The figure covers agreements and contracts involving three Southeast Asian countries—the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Speaking to ANI, Singh said the Philippines has already received BrahMos systems worth about $330 million, while exports to Vietnam are expected to be around $100 million initially and those to Indonesia around $200 million. He said India has contracts or agreements involving all three countries.

The Philippines became the first foreign customer for BrahMos after signing a contract in January 2022 for a Shore-Based Anti-Ship Missile System. The contract covered three batteries and marked a major step in India’s effort to export an advanced, strategic weapon system developed jointly by India and Russia.

Vietnam and Indonesia have since expanded the missile’s Southeast Asian footprint. Defence Secretary Singh had earlier said in May that the BrahMos deal with Vietnam had been signed, while the Indonesian agreement was in its final stages. In July, India and Indonesia announced an agreement on cooperation involving the BrahMos Missile System during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jakarta.

The missile’s growing export profile comes alongside a sharp rise in India’s overall defence exports. India exported defence equipment worth a record ₹38,424 crore in FY2025-26, up 62.66% from ₹23,622 crore the previous year. The government has set a target of taking exports beyond ₹50,000 crore, while around 145 Indian companies are now involved in defence exports.

BrahMos is particularly significant because it represents a move beyond exports of smaller components and conventional equipment towards high-value, strategic weapon systems. Singh has also highlighted India’s price competitiveness in missiles, saying Indian systems can be offered at substantially lower prices than comparable products from foreign OEMs.

The expanding BrahMos customer base also has a strategic dimension. With the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia all located in the wider Indo-Pacific, the missile is becoming part of India’s defence-industrial engagement with Southeast Asia, linking defence exports with longer-term security and maritime partnerships in the region.
