Panaji: Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) launched INS Srishti (Yard 1283), a Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) built for the Indian Navy, on October 27. The launch marked another milestone in India’s indigenous warship-building programme as the country sought to strengthen its maritime security capabilities through domestically developed naval platforms.

The NGOPV programme is intended to strengthen the Navy’s ability to conduct maritime surveillance, protect offshore assets and safeguard India’s maritime interests. Offshore patrol vessels also support missions such as anti-piracy operations, search and rescue, and humanitarian assistance when required.

GSL Chairman and Managing Director Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay highlighted the shipyard’s commitment to delivering quality naval platforms and meeting the Navy’s operational requirements. The launch also reflected GSL’s focus on improving production capacity, project execution and its ability to deliver complex vessels to demanding technical standards.

The programme aligned with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives, supporting domestic defence manufacturing and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers. The launch of INS Srishti marked an important construction milestone, although the vessel must undergo further outfitting and trials before entering operational service.
