Dhaka: India has signalled its intent to strengthen its military and strategic relationship with Bangladesh, as Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi held talks with Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's Defence Adviser, Brigadier (Retd.) Shamsul Islam.
Trivedi said India attaches “immense importance” to its deep military and strategic relationship with Bangladesh and reaffirmed New Delhi's commitment to professional cooperation, capacity building and shared security interests.

The two sides discussed joint training programmes, exchanges between military officials, disaster management, regional peace and maritime security.
The engagement comes after a period of strained India-Bangladesh relations, making the continued functioning of military-to-military channels particularly significant.
Bangladesh sits at a critical junction connecting India's Northeast, the Bay of Bengal and Southeast Asia. Its geography gives Dhaka importance well beyond bilateral relations.
For New Delhi, stable security ties with Bangladesh can support border security, counter-terrorism cooperation, maritime security and connectivity with the Northeast.
At the same time, Bangladesh is diversifying its external partnerships, with China remaining a major defence and infrastructure partner and Pakistan-Dhaka relations also becoming warmer since the 2024 political transition.
The latest engagement suggests that India is seeking to preserve and rebuild its defence relationship with Dhaka without allowing political differences to completely disrupt established military channels.
For New Delhi, deeper defence engagement with Bangladesh is ultimately about more than military cooperation—it is about maintaining strategic stability on India's eastern flank and protecting India's interests in the increasingly important Bay of Bengal.
