New Delhi: India is considering modifying its Su-30MKI fighter fleet to integrate the Russian-origin RVV-BD long-range air-to-air missile, in a move that could significantly expand the Indian Air Force's beyond-visual-range (BVR) combat capability.
The proposal is expected to be considered by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), with the missile reportedly capable of engaging aerial targets at ranges of up to 300 km.

The RVV-BD is designed for long-range engagements and is particularly significant because weapons in this class can threaten high-value airborne assets such as AEW&C and reconnaissance aircraft, rather than being limited to conventional fighter-on-fighter engagements.
The missile is reported to be capable of reaching very high speeds, with Russian variants associated with speeds of around Mach 6.
Integrating the weapon would require modifications to the Su-30MKI's aircraft systems, software and weapon interfaces, similar in principle to earlier complex weapon integrations on the platform. India's Su-30MKI has already been modified to carry weapons such as the air-launched BrahMos, demonstrating the platform's ability to absorb major new weapon systems.
The move comes as India is simultaneously pushing indigenous BVR weapons such as the Astra family, including longer-range future variants.
That creates a two-track approach: rapidly expand existing long-range capability through a foreign system while developing an indigenous alternative for the future.
For the Su-30MKI—with its large size, long endurance and substantial weapons capacity—a very-long-range air-to-air missile could turn the fighter into an even more powerful stand-off counter-air platform.
Long-range missiles are increasingly changing air warfare by allowing fighters to threaten targets without entering traditional visual-range combat.
For India, the potential RVV-BD integration is therefore not simply about adding another missile. It could strengthen the IAF's ability to hold enemy fighters, airborne early-warning aircraft and other high-value aerial platforms at risk from greater distances.
If cleared and successfully integrated, the programme could give India's Su-30MKI fleet a significant new long-range BVR capability while the indigenous Astra family continues to mature.
