Mumbai: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar discussed energy security and defence cooperation in Mumbai on October 20, reaffirming their commitment to advancing the India–US strategic partnership. The meeting came as both countries wanted to strengthen cooperation across trade, technology and security amid continuing economic and geopolitical challenges.

Jaishankar said that the discussions covered trade, energy, technology, defence and people-to-people ties, alongside regional and global developments. Rubio separately highlighted energy security and defence cooperation as key areas of engagement, while US Ambassador Sergio Gor pointed to opportunities for deeper collaboration across defence, emerging technologies and trade.
Energy security remained a central strategic issue. India is seeking diversified and commercially viable supplies of crude oil, liquefied natural gas and other energy products. US supplies could support that diversification, although pricing, shipping costs and market conditions will determine how far bilateral energy trade expands.
Defence cooperation also remained a major pillar of the relationship, with discussions expected to cover defence trade, technology transfer and co-production opportunities. For India, the central objective is to turn strategic alignment into practical industrial and technological gains while strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities.
The meeting signaled continued diplomatic engagement, but neither side announced a specific new defence contract or energy agreement in the statements released after the talks. The next test is whether discussions translate into concrete commercial outcomes and sustained cooperation.
New Delhi and Washington are keeping energy and defence cooperation central to their strategic partnership, but tangible progress will depend on agreements that deliver commercially viable energy supplies and meaningful technology or industrial benefits
